Choose Capacity At Working Height
A forklift capacity badge does not tell the whole story. The weight, dimensions and centre of gravity of your load all affect the truck specification. Long packs, uneven stillages and attachments can reduce the weight that a truck may safely handle at the required height.
Send the heaviest load weight, pallet dimensions and highest placement level with your enquiry. Describe any offset loads or non-standard packaging. Ask for the applicable load chart, rather than choosing a truck simply because its nominal tonnage sounds sufficient.
Match The Truck To Your Site
Electric counterbalance trucks suit many indoor handling tasks, subject to floor condition, battery arrangements and duty cycle. An engine-powered truck may suit some outdoor operations, but exhaust exposure needs proper assessment. An electric truck is not automatically suitable for every yard or weather condition.
Measure your narrowest doorway, lowest overhead obstruction and tightest turning space. Identify slopes, dock edges, fragile surfaces and any loading bridge. A standard warehouse forklift should not be assumed suitable for rough ground. Share photographs if the working route is difficult to describe.
Plan The Hire Step By Step
First, send the site postcode, start date, likely duration and operating hours. Next, confirm the load specification and access measurements. We then help clarify the truck type, any attachment and the practical requirements for delivery, collection and use.
Review the written quotation before booking. It should explain the hire period, transport charges, included hours and arrangements for damage, breakdowns and extensions. At handover, check the truck identity and condition against the paperwork. Keep the operating instructions accessible and nominate someone to manage daily checks and reported defects.
Operator And Safety Responsibilities
Hiring a forklift does not remove the employer's responsibility for safe operation. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, known as PUWER, apply to work equipment. The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, known as LOLER, apply to its lifting functions.
HSE describes operator training as basic training, specific job training and familiarisation training. Confirm that your operator is trained for the actual truck and task, with suitable supervision and authorisation. Separate pedestrians from truck routes and agree a safe unloading location before delivery. Read the linked HSE guidance below when planning the work.
What Changes The Hire Cost
Hire cost depends on truck capacity, mast height, power source, attachments, availability and the length of the agreement. Delivery distance and difficult access can change the transport charge. A multi-shift operation may also need a different battery or charging arrangement from occasional unloading work.
Ask whether charging equipment, maintenance, breakdown attendance and collection are included. Check excess hours, fuel or charge requirements at return, and damage terms. We do not publish a generic price because it would hide these differences. Request an itemised quotation for your actual site and workload.
Prepare For Delivery And Return
Clear the unloading area and confirm that the delivery vehicle can reach it without conflicting with normal site traffic. Tell the supplier about access restrictions, booking systems, security arrangements and any limits on delivery times. Confirm who will receive the truck and inspect it on arrival.
Before collection, remove loose materials and follow the agreed return requirements. Record the truck's condition and hour meter reading. If your work is likely to overrun, request an extension before the planned end date. Availability and extension rates need written confirmation.
Forklift Truck Hire Questions
Can I Hire A Forklift For A Short Project?
Forklift hire for a short project can suit unloading, stock moves or temporary production work. Give us your start date, expected end date and operating hours so availability and minimum hire terms can be checked. Transport can form a significant part of a short booking, so compare the complete quotation rather than the hire rate alone.
Does Forklift Hire Include An Operator?
Forklift hire does not automatically include an operator. State whether you need equipment only or operated handling when you enquire. Your business must check training, site familiarisation and authorisation for anyone using the truck. An operator trained on one truck type may need further instruction before using a different type or attachment.
Read The Safety Guidance
Plan your work using HSE lift truck guidance, PUWER guidance and HSE thorough examination guidance. For training, read HSE operator training advice. Examination buyers can also consult the CFTS examination questions.
